ProfessionalOrganizational Unit Overview: NC General Statue Chapter
116, Article 29 A (116-239.5), provided for the establishment of
eight university laboratory schools with the mission "improving
student performance in local school administrative units with low
performing schools by providing an enhanced education program for
students residing in those units and providing exposure and
training for teachers and principals to successfully address
challenges existing in high need school settings. The laboratory
school shall provide an opportunity for research, demonstration,
student support, and expansion of the teaching experience and
evaluation regarding management, teaching, and learning."Job
Duties: To serve as administrator of the East Carolina University
School, the Principal will cultivate a culture of innovation that
supports effective instructional practices/strategies to promote
student academic success and personal success for all students and
adults in the school. The Principal will work collaboratively to
develop and implement policies, innovative programs, curriculum
activities, professional development, and budgets to achieve the
mission of the school. The Principal will work collaboratively with
university staff to support the work of teacher leadership
preparation, school leadership preparation, and education research.
The lab school involves cross campus collaboration to provide the
students a spectrum of support and services to comprehensively
address their academic, social-emotional, physical, and
family/community needs. The school will include one class per grade
level for kindergarten through 5th grade. Responsibilities include
Leadership; Positive School Culture; Administrative and Human
Resources; Clinical Experience Coordination; Community Relations;
Strategic and Organizational Planning.Leadership (40%):--- The
Principal will provide leadership and administration to motivate
effective instructional practice and support personnel to strive
for superior performance so as to provide the best possible
opportunities for student growth and development, both
educationally and personally.--- The Principal conceptualizes the
broad goals of the school and plans accordingly and collaboratively
with the University School Executive Director and ECU faculty
members to ensure that procedures and schedules are implemented to
carry out the total lab school program.--- The Principal will
cultivate leadership in students and staff.--- The Principal will
serve as the administrator of a school in helping develop and
implement policies, programs, curriculum activities, and budgets in
a manner that promotes the educational development of each student
and the professional development of each staff member.Positive
School Culture (20%):--- The Principal will foster and lead
collaboration within the school.--- The Principal will develop a
"professional community" of teachers who guide one another in
improving instruction; such as developing and aligning curriculum,
instructional practices, and assessments; problem solving;
participating in peer observations.--- The Principal will
create/foster an atmosphere that inspires innovation in the
teaching and learning process.--- The Principal will create/foster
a culture that gets everybody in the school involved and invested
in the vision for the school and demonstrate to them that their
input is valued.--- The Principal will build capacity of teachers
to think more broadly and to utilize a mindset of inquiry and
exploration.Administration and Human Resources (20%):--- The
Principal will actively recruit and help select qualified teachers
and staff that are comfortable with a climate of innovation and
inquiry within the school.--- The Principal helps define the
responsibilities and accountability of staff members and develops
plans for interpreting the school program to the community in
collaboration with faculty and the East Carolina University School
Advisory Board or representative.--- The Principal will provide
activities which facilitate the professional growth of the school
staff and enhance the quality of the instructional program. The
principal will coach, develop, and grow teacher leaders within the
school.Clinical Experience Coordination (10%):--- The Principal
will support the coordination of clinical placements for ECU
teacher education and educational leadership students and work with
appropriate faculty and personnel to support the coordinated field
experiences to positively impact university students as well as the
students enrolled within the University School.--- The Principal
will support the establishment of a comprehensive field experience
schedule in alignment with lab school instructional activities and
in collaboration with the ECU liaison.Community Relations (10%):---
The Principal will form and enhance meaningful collaboration and
relationships amongst school and community stakeholders.--- The
Principal will develop strong community partnerships to help
strengthen the community while increasing student academic
success.--- The Principal will leverage community partnerships to
design and negotiate wrap around services for student success.---
The Principal will engage in ongoing communication to ensure the
community is aware of school resources available for use by the
community.--- The Principal will leverage community to improve
learning and achievement of all students by collaborating with
families and other community members.--- The Principal will respond
to community interests and needs, and mobilize community resources
to demonstrate and promote excellence.--- The Principal will
advocate for students and families.All other duties as
assigned.This position is contingent upon available funding.Minimum
Qualifications:Master's degree in educational leadership or related
fields (such as educational policy analysis, adult and continuing
education or curriculum and instruction); Qualifying degrees must
be conferred and received from appropriately accredited
institutions.License or Certification Required by Statute or
Regulation:Current license or eligibility of licensure in K-12
Administration.Preferred Experience, Skills,
Training/Education:Leadership experience in innovative schools with
a track record of improving student outcomes.Demonstrated knowledge
of public school and university partnerships; experience as a
school-level administrator; administrative and supervisory skills
or experiences and skills that closely parallel administrative type
work. Experience that demonstrates the ability to be self-directed;
organized with attention to detail; innovation and outcome
oriented; technology proficient across multiple platforms.Excellent
oral and written communication skills; and evidence of skill
