Technology Corporation "Hartsville Operations" located in McBee,
South Carolina, is a mini-mill supplying a variety of sizes and
specifications of high-quality round, square and hexagonal
stainless steel bars for distribution. Carpenter Technology
acquired Talley Metals in 1997 to increase manufacturing capacity
within the corporation's core Specialty Alloys Operations
division.MECHANIC IIIThe primary purpose of this position is to
provide mechanical maintenance support to production equipment and
other manufacturing support systems and facilities. ESSENTIAL
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Other duties may be assigned, including
but not limited to housekeeping, cross training and operator level
maintenance in support of equipment operation. Responsibilities
also include attention to safety according to specific training and
safety rules. Responsible to develop, maintain, and implement an
effective and efficient Preventive Maintenance program in order to
anticipate/prevent equipment failures. Trouble-shoot and diagnose
manufacturing and support systems and makes effective repairs in an
efficient manner to get equipment back into operation as quickly as
possible. Responsible for following established safety procedures,
including wearing PPE and lock-out/tag out procedures. Responsible
to test modified or new equipment to ensure proper and safe
operation before turning equipment over to the production
operators. Responsible to understand the plant lubrication system
and use applicable techniques to maintain/repair the system.
Maintain and trouble-shoot pipe, hydraulic, pumping, and pneumatic
systems. Calibrates and aligns production equipment, including
motors, gear boxes, gauges, valves, pressure regulators, and
related equipment. Sets up and operates a variety of stationary
machine tools to fabricate or repair machine parts, jigs, fixtures,
and tools. Installs, inspects, and trouble-shoots bearings for
production equipment, and other support equipment as is applicable.
Repairs and maintains plant infrastructure, including utilities
(water, air, electrical, gas and propane). Operates welding
equipment to cut or join metal parts. Operates mobile equipment as
necessary in the performance of maintenance duties. Assist in the
training of other production and maintenance employees. Responsible
to follow established and common sense housekeeping at all times.
Read and understand system drawings; i.e., assembly drawings,
piping, P & ID, layout, etc. Maintain and trouble-shoot furnace
combustion system. Maintain, trouble-shoot, and calibrate
electro/mechanical control systems. Performs other duties as
assigned. KNOWLEDGE AND TRAINING REQUIRED The Mechanical
Maintenance Technician requires progressive training from entry
level position. The progression is as outlined: Entry
Requirements:
- Associates Degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, closely
related field, or equivalent on-the-job experience. Class I
Mechanic (3 - 12 months)
- Safety training - lock-out/tag-out, confined spaces, and other
company required safety training
- Mobile equipment, overhead crane and high reach operator
training
- Plant infrastructure training - air compressors, natural gas
and propane, electrical power systems
- Basic understanding of all plant production processes - hot
mill, annealing, cleaning, cold finish, and cold draw
- Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) training
- Plant protection - understand how to secure all plant
systems
- Basic welding training
- Print reading training
- Lubrication training
- Preventive Maintenance training Class II Mechanic (12 - 24
months)
- Communication/Interaction Skills training
- Select a specialty and develop plan to progress - welding,
machining, hydraulics, etc.
- Hydraulics/pneumatics training
- Bearings training
- Alignment training
- Combustion training
- Advanced PM training - maintenance management systems including
parts ordering/inventory.
- Complete PMs
- Respond to trouble calls Class III Mechanic (12 - 18 months)
- Complete plan for technical development of chosen
specialty
- Develop Safety Standards for a major project; i.e.,
Lock-Out/Tag-Out
- Thorough understanding of the two major manufacturing
processes
- Develop a PM schedule for a major manufacturing process
- Calibration training
- Advanced hydraulics training
- Electrical basics training
- Complete PMs
- Respond to trouble callsMechanical Maintenance Lead Person (4
years)
- Leadership role of problem solving process problems
- Continue to learn other plant production processes
- Leadership role on startups of new equipment
- Training of other maintenance and production personnel
- Assisting Manager with time management, to include breaks, time
between jobs, etc.
- Assign job in absence of Manager
- Assist Manager with customer/vendor meetings and maintain good
working relations
- Develop PMs for equipment, as well as complete and improve
existing PMs
- Monitor and champion 5S efforts throughout maintenance
areas
- Respond to trouble calls, as well as make daily plant tours to
monitor equipment and housekeepingPREFERRED FOR THE MECHANIC III
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, well
organized and the ability to prioritize tasks and make appropriate
decisions.
- Willing to work in a fast paced, every changing work
environment. PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT While performing the
duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to reach
with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand;
walk, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or
hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50
pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include
close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception,
and ability to focus. The work environment is such that the
employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The
employee is frequently exposed to extreme heat. The employee is
occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or
caustic chemicals, outside weather conditions, risk of electrical
shock or vibration. The noise level of the work environment is
